Recognized as a leading expert in Hi-Tech Cultivation and sustainable agriculture, I have been honored with prestigious awards such as the Swami Sahajanand Saraswati Outstanding Extension Scientist Award-2015 by ICAR and the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Awards for Scientific Excellence, reflecting my contributions to agricultural innovation. My work has also been celebrated through accolades like the Glory of India Gold Medal, Scientist of the Year Award, and the Rising Women of India Award for excellence in education and research. My commitment to advancing high-tech farming solutions has been acknowledged through lifetime achievement awards, including the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Lifetime Achievement National Award, and felicitations like the Certificate of Felicitation from ICAR for outstanding contributions. These accolades underscore my dedication to driving the future of agriculture through expertise, insight, and sustainable solutions
Establishment of a Hi-Tech Cultivation Research Centre
Pioneered a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing research and popularizing innovative farming techniques in Kerala. Dr. P Suseela has pioneered the design and installation of 12 polyhouse structures (Quonset, Gable, Mansard, and rain shelter) to study optimal configurations under varying agroclimatic conditions. Also, evaluated structural parameters (shape, ventilation, sheet combinations, orientation) and environmental factors (artificial lighting, shade net color) for enhanced productivity. She has also conducted crop suitability studies for polyhouse cultivation, testing high-value crops like English cucumber, capsicum, tomato, lettuce, and indigenous varieties. Dr. P Suseela has also performed comparative studies between polyhouse and rain shelter systems, analyzing pest/disease resistance and yield performance
Aquaponics Innovation & Commercialization
Dr. P Suseela played a pivotal role in developing and optimizing aquaponics systems for sustainable food production, adapting them to Kerala’s unique conditions. She successfully established nine aquaponics units, including four commercial-scale and five family-scale systems, incorporating media beds, deep water culture (DWC), and nutrient film technique (NFT) systems. Her research focused on optimizing filter designs, media types, and siphon systems to enhance efficiency. Additionally, she identified high-performing crops such as cucumber, tomato, and lettuce, along with suitable fish species for aquaponics. Dr. Suseela also developed specialized nutrient management and pest control strategies tailored specifically for aquaponics farming, contributing significantly to its success in the region
Hydroponics & Vertical Farming Advancements
Dr. P Suseela made significant advancements in hydroponics and vertical farming, pioneering scalable solutions for both urban and rural applications. She installed 19 hydroponics units, including nutrient film technique (NFT), deep water culture (DWC), and substrate-based systems, to evaluate crop suitability and optimize designs. Additionally, she designed and tested multiple vertical gardening models to maximize space efficiency in cultivation. As part of her innovations, she developed six compact poly-kitchen gardens, each covering 20 square meters and capable of growing over 250 plants, making them an ideal solution for urban households with limited space. These contributions have helped promote sustainable and high-yield farming practices in diverse settings
Integrated Automated Farming Systems
Dr. P Suseela spearheaded the development of integrated automated farming systems, merging aquaponics, vertical farming, and poultry into efficient, multi-tier setups. She engineered three fully automated units—two at a commercial scale and one for family-scale use—capable of producing fresh vegetables, fish, eggs, and meat with minimal manual intervention. These systems were optimized for year-round productivity and designed to withstand varying climatic conditions, ensuring climate-resilient farming. Her innovations demonstrate how automation can enhance sustainability, productivity, and resource efficiency in modern agriculture
Training & Knowledge Dissemination
Dr. P Suseela played a key role in training and knowledge dissemination, empowering farmers, entrepreneurs, and gardening enthusiasts through extensive capacity-building programs on hi-tech cultivation methods. She trained over 700 participants across a wide range of modules, including hydroponics (70+ sessions), aquaponics (180+ sessions), polyhouse farming (300+ sessions), and hi-tech kitchen gardening (150+ sessions). Additionally, she conducted training in open precision farming, terrarium gardening, and tyre cultivation, ensuring a holistic approach to modern agriculture. Her initiatives were designed to deliver practical, scalable solutions tailored to Kerala’s unique agro- ecological and socioeconomic conditions, fostering sustainable and efficient farming practices across the state
